According to the evidence to date, an IPM approach is the best way to deal with bed bug infestations. IPM can be defined as the “use of all possible methods in a logical combination that minimizes risk of pesticide exposure, safeguards the environment, and maximizes effectiveness.” This involves coordinated education, identification, inspection, preparation, treatment, prevention, and follow-up measures to ensure that all bed bugs are eradicated and a resurgence of the infestation is prevented. Bed bug behaviour patterns and their emerging resistance to pesticides mean that pesticides alone are unlikely to solve a bed bug problem.
